The iconic line, \u201cIf you build it, they will come\u201d \u2014 from the 1989 film, \u201cField of Dreams,\u201d set in Iowa \u2014actually holds true for this Hawkeye State gem. For those that recognize artistry, put together to be blown away by this otherworldly treasure tucked away in West Bend. The shrine, spanning a complete metropolis block, incorporates the most important assortment of minerals in anybody place on Earth. Every sq. inch is bedazzled with crystals, fossils, stalactites, gems, shells and petrified wooden. The largest man-made grotto on this planet was created by German immigrant, Father Paul Matthias Dobberstein. After arriving within the states at age 20, he studied for priesthood on the seminary of St. Francis close to Milwaukee and was ordained in 1897.<\/p>\n

Soon afterward, he grew to become critically in poor health with pneumonia and prayed for heavenly intervention, vowing to construct a shrine if his prayers have been answered. Luckily, the younger seminarian survived and after being appointed priest at Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend, he started developing the shrine in 1912. He had spent a decade gathering rocks, fossils, and valuable stones, together with a stalagmite weighing over a ton from Carlsbad Caverns. Construction was accomplished 90 years later, after the daddy\u2019s loss of life with the assistance of collaborators. Today, the shrine is a conglomeration of 9 grottos depicting scenes within the life, loss of life and resurrection of Jesus.<\/p>\n
