During US President Joe Biden\u2019s go to to Canada, the federal authorities introduced funding of $420 million over 10 years to speed up restoration and safety of the Great Lakes by the Freshwater Action Plan. <\/a><\/p>\n

The funding pays for cleanup of 12 of the remaining 14 Areas of Concern<\/a> within the Great Lakes by 2030, and discount of phosphorous loadings to Lake Erie.<\/p>\n

The 12 Areas of Concern embrace Thunder Bay, Nigipon Bay, Peninsula Harbour, St. Mary\u2019s River, St. Clair River, Detroit River, Niagara River, Hamilton Harbour, Toronto and Region, Port Hope Harbour, Bay
of Quinte, and the St. Lawrence River.<\/p>\n

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) welcomed the funding.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a step in the right direction, but the reality is that this is a fraction of what our US counterparts are contributing,\u201d mentioned OFAH Fisheries Biologist Adam Weir.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur neighbour to the south spends roughly the same amount as Canada\u2019s ten-year plan each year and, since 2010, the US Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has provided billions of dollars for projects.\u201d<\/p>\n
