The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project<\/a> (KPAP) has been enhancing porters\u2019 lives and combating for higher circumstances on Kili since 2003. When the pandemic hit and borders closed in 2020, hundreds of porters confronted unemployment. KPAP turned to an uncommon resolution: natural gardening.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Karen Valenti remembers what life was like for porters on Tanzania\u2019s Mt. Kilimanjaro. Rewind 20 years, earlier than the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project<\/a> (KPAP) started, and circumstances on the mountain have been grim, to say the least.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I came on board in 2004, porters were carrying heavy loads \u2013 more than the industry\u2019s weight limitation,\u201d she says. \u201cThey were only getting one meal a day, sleeping in crowded, poor condition tents, and receiving very low salaries.\u201d<\/p>\n
