Welcome to right this moment’s Photo of the Day! Here we’ve got a cool rimfire Remington. This is the Remington Smoot revolver. This notably gaudy one is a Remington Smoot Model No 2. These Remington revolvers have been made in small rimfire cartridges like 30 Rimfire. They have been launched as a way to compete with the very comparable Colt pocket pistol known as the Colt New Line. Unfortunately for Remington, Colt had extra notoriety when it got here to revolvers.
“Only around 3,000 New Model No. 1 revolvers were manufactured around 1877-1885 compared to over 25,000 of the related New Model No. 3 revolvers. Most of these revolvers were plain whereas this beautiful example has nearly full coverage scroll and floral engraving along with dot pattern borders. Only the lower surfaces and some of the recesses are left plain. These same engraving pattern has been seen on at least two other Remington-Smoot revolvers. The top of the barrel has a rounded blade front sight and “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y. PAT. W.S. SMOOT. OCT. 21. 1873.” An integral notch rear sight is behind the highest strap.”
