An enormous smallmouth bass caught in Lake Erie in Canadian waters close to Pelee Island by an Ohio angler could be a brand new Ontario document.
Gregg Gallagher of Fremont netted the ten.15-pound, 23.75-inch bass utilizing drop-shot and eight-pound check on Thursday, Nov. 3, based on employees with the Ontario Record Fish Registry, which is operated by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH).
The species, size, and 19.275-inch girth have been vetted by Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) biologists, who’re holding the fish pending affirmation.
“This is certainly the largest smallmouth bass that I’ve ever seen,” ODNR Lake Erie Fisheries Program Administrator Travis J. Hartman said.
If confirmed, the smallmouth would beat the present document of 9.84 kilos from Birchbark Lake, close to Kinmount, northwest of Peterborough. It would even be the one licensed 10-pound bass caught in any of the Great Lakes.
