A Dad Reflects on Three Generations of Outdoorsmen – Gossamer Gear

By: Nick Brooks

There are three generations of outdoorsmen within the image under. So a lot of what I do know and love in regards to the open air is due to what my father first shared with me. And now I’ve the pleasure of doing the identical with my boys. Does it get any higher? “Dad-ing” within the open air is a legacy that I’m happy with.

Meet “Grandpa Chris”

This man grew up in Tuskegee, Alabama. His mother (my grandmother) was the den chief of his Boy Scout pack. He grew up fishing, mountain climbing, canoeing, and driving his horse, Hero. He even earned his Eagle Scout rank. As an grownup, he climbed, sailed, skied, off-roaded, white-water kayaked, backpacked, guided out of doors journeys, and the listing goes on. He is the last word outdoorsman. He’s older now, and not likely out adventuring anymore. But I nonetheless be taught a lot from him with each dialog. And, in fact, I haven’t forgotten all he shared with my brothers and me. Did I point out I used to be a triplet?

Triplets Gone Wild

Out of the three of us, I most likely get exterior probably the most lately, however I grew up with two killer brothers and all of us liked getting on the market and working amuck within the wild. Growing up with two brothers and built-in finest mates is one thing I’m very grateful for. Many of my firsts within the open air had been alongside these two jokers. Growing up within the South has its personal particular attraction for certain. But not like on the West Coast, rising up, you didn’t see a whole lot of brown youngsters mountain climbing, tenting, horseback driving, snowboarding, or crusing. And but, as a result of I had my brothers, I by no means felt misplaced. They had been my first crew, and they’re why in the present day, having a strong brotherhood to do life within the open air with is so crucial to me.

Forging My Own Trail

Now, I’ve the distinction of being a dad to 2 superb (albeit WILD & CRAZY) boys, and it brings me such pleasure to introduce them to all the pieces the good open air has to supply. When my eldest son was turning 4, I requested him what he needed to do for his birthday. He shortly replied, “I wanna go backpacking like you!”

I’ll always remember that straightforward two-mile hike in, establishing camp by the river and watching the marvel in his eyes as he took all the pieces in. Watching my boys encounter the out of doors world and all they’ve gained from it has fueled my ardour for offering this chance to different youngsters of coloration in my neighborhood. It’s why I’m a Scoutmaster and stay dedicated to creating certain our Scouts get pleasure from all kinds of outside experiences and develop to be good stewards of the surroundings—whether or not they earn Eagle Rank or not. I preach “leave no trace” ideas to my kiddos and my scouts, however I do hope I go away my mark on the outside by main the following era of outdoorsmen into the wild.
