Today, Old Abe is honored along with his statue atop a 122-foot column in Vicksburg National Military Park. His determine rests on the Wisconsin State Memorial monument within the historic battleground.

Look intently. Old Abe, in fact, is the legendary American bald eagle. Abe’s buddy, Captain John E. Perkins, introduced the eagle with him into 36 battles for Union troops in the course of the Civil War. Old Abe was proudly carried into battle tethered to a five-foot perch painted pink, white and blue.
“The eagle was named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln and became the mascot of a Wisconsin regiment during the Civil War,” bus tour information David Maggio says. “Old Abe is one of the lucky ones who survived the Civil War.”
On our American Symphony cruise from Memphis to New Orleans, Vicksburg National Military Park was one of many shore tour choices. As a former Marine, my brother Joe was fascinated about visiting the location for the primary time and I wished to study extra about Old Abe.
Although it’s a terribly tragic place, I’m glad the battleground was saved and was a nationwide army park. Such prime property may simply have been bulldozed for high-rise flats, workplace buildings or a shopping mall. Instead, the nation wants to recollect and honor those that fought and died right here. And, hopefully, put apart weapons of warfare endlessly.

Vicksburg siege lasted 47 days
Vicksburg Military Park is large with a 14-mile tour and greater than 1,400 monuments and memorials. We toured on the American Cruise Lines cruise bus and our bus tour information was glorious. The customer heart presents a 20-minute movie in addition to reveals concerning the horrible siege that lasted from May 18 to July 4, 1863.
“For 47 days, both soldiers and citizens suffered,” David says, including that Union cannon bombarded Vicksburg from the east whereas Union naval forces lobbed mortar shells from the west.
Caught within the crossfire, Vicksburg’s civilians sought the protection of caves dug into the edges of hills. Civilians introduced requirements into the recent, damp, musty and humid caves. In one occasion, a child was born in a cave. His dad and mom named him William Siege Green.
Vicksburg residents needed to take refuge in dug caves in the course of the 47-day siege.
“Vicksburg was vital to victory. Both sides knew that,” David says. “Confederate President Jefferson Davis knew that and so did President Abraham Lincoln who said that Vicksburg was the key and that the war could never be brought to a close until that key was in the Union’s pocket.”
In the top, Confederates beneath the management of General John C. Pemberton, surrendered Vicksburg to Union Federals beneath the management of US Major General Ulysses S. Grant on July 4, 1863.
Erecting monuments to fallen troopers and sailors
Soon after Vicksburg National Military Park was established in 1899, the nation’s main architects and sculptors had been commissioned to honor the troopers and sailors who had fought within the marketing campaign. The park’s earliest state memorial – the Massachusetts Memorial – was devoted in 1903 and over 95 % of the monuments that adopted had been erected previous to 1917.
Missouri memorial is the one monument devoted to each Union and Confederate troops.
Kentucky had a considerable variety of males preventing on each the Union and Confederate sides. The state has two memorials representing Kentucky troopers. Dedicated Oct. 20, 2001, the Kentucky State Memorial options life-size sculptures of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, each from Kentucky.
Looking as if they’re standing for a face-to-face assembly, the 2 males are flanked by granite panels that checklist all troops, Union and Confederate, who fought at Vicksburg. In May 2010, a Kentucky Confederate Memorial was erected and is the most recent state memorial. The monument holds a prolonged inscription detailing the involvement of Confederate Kentucky troops at Vicksburg.
Modeled after the Roman Pantheon, the Illinois State Memorial options 47 steps within the lengthy stairway, one for every day of the Siege of Vicksburg. The memorial was being renovated once we visited.
Salvaging USS Cairo warship
Almost 100 years after it sank on Dec. 12, 1862, the gunboat USS Cairo was found beneath layers of silt, sand and dirt within the Yazoo River. One of America’s first ironclad warships, the Cairo was the primary vessel sunk by an electrically detonated torpedo (mine). Today, the artifacts of the Cairo salvaged from the Nineteen Sixties excavation are a part of the park.
The USS Cairo was found nearly a century after it was sunk in the course of the Civil War.
Like a time capsule, the Cairo preserved data on naval building, naval shops, armament and the crew’s private gear. “Unbelievably, none of the 175 crew members died when the Cairo sank,” David says.
The USS Cairo exhibit embrace the crew’s private gear.
Near the Cairo is Vicksburg National Cemetery which holds the stays of 17,000 Union servicemen – greater than every other nationwide cemetery. National cemeteries had been created in 1862 to supply correct and honorable burials for the boys who died in service.
In the aftermath of Civil War battle, the lifeless had been usually buried unexpectedly in makeshift graves. About 13,000 Union servicemen within the cemetery are unknown. Many Confederates who died within the siege are buried in close by Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Old Abe finds dwelling in Wisconsin State Capitol
In 1864, Old Abe acquired an honorable discharge and was introduced to the State of Wisconsin. The well-known warfare eagle was an honored resident of the Wisconsin State Capitol and regularly traveled nationwide in assist of veteran reunions, patriotic gatherings and particular exhibitions.
Old Abe’s dwelling was a particular aviary within the Capitol constructing. But in 1881, a hearth broke out in a paint and solvent storage space close to Old Abe’s aviary. Weakened by the fumes, the Wisconsin warfare eagle died a month later within the arms of his handler.
“Old Abe was then mounted and displayed in the Capitol until a second fire destroyed his remains in 1904,” David says.
In 1921, Old Abe was honored because the insignia of the 101st Airborne Division Air Assault. With their insignia of a bald eagle on a black protect, the 101st Airborne is nicknamed the “Screaming Eagles” as a salute to Old Abe.
As a little bit of trivia, maybe probably the most well-known 101st Airborne Division alum can also be one of many biggest guitarists ever. Enlisting when he was 19 years previous, Jimi Hendrix served with the 101st for a few 12 months earlier than he was honorably discharged from the Army in 1962. The relaxation, in fact, is historical past.
As for Old Abe, when the moon is full, legend says, the bald eagle usually leaves his perch above the Vicksburg National Military Park monument. He soars over the battlefield to maintain watch over his fallen comrades and the hallowed floor the place so many perished.
