Transport Canada (TC) is floating the concept of obligatory compliance of non-public flotation units (PFDs) and life jackets, via regional and nationwide conferences of the Canadian Marine Advisory Council (CMAC).
The CMAC represents member pursuits in transport, navigation, and marine air pollution issues and advises the federal government on points and alternatives associated to marine security and safety.
“Transport Canada regularly reviews its regulations to ensure they remain relevant and achieve their underlying safety objectives,” Senior Communications Advisor Hicham Ayoun mentioned. “Focused work on the issue of mandatory wear began in 2019, given the persistent number of fatalities from the lack or improper use of PFDs/life jackets, which account for almost 90% of recreational boating fatalities in Canada.”
He famous that TC is within the means of consultations relating to choices across the obligatory put on of PFDs/life jackets.
TC is introduced life jacket and PFD choices to the CMAC relating to:
Who should put on them
• Mandatory carrying of a PFD or a life jacket for any individual aged 14 years or youthful on board a pleasure craft; or
• Mandatory carrying of a PFD or a life jacket for any individual aged 18 years or youthful on board a pleasure craft.
Vessel dimension
• Mandatory carrying of a PFD or a life jacket for any individual on board any pleasure craft six metres in size and under; or
• Mandatory carrying of a PFD or a life jacket for any individual on board any pleasure craft 9 metres in size and under.
Type of vessel
• Mandatory carrying of a PFD or a life jacket for any individual on board any motorized vessel (i.e. powerboats); or
• Mandatory carrying of a PFD or a life jacket for any individual on board any motorized vessel (i.e. powerboats) and human-powered vessels (i.e. canoes, kayaks)
Currently, boaters should have one life jacket on board per individual, however they don’t need to be worn.
